What Are Geothermal HVAC Systems?

Geothermal HVAC systems, also known as ground-source heat pumps, are systems that use the natural warmth of the earth to provide heating and cooling for your home. The system uses fluid-filled loops buried underground to extract the constant temperature of the earth to heat your home or deposit excess heat in order to cool it.

The components of a geothermal HVAC system include a heat pump, underground piping known as the loop system, and a heat distribution system, such as ductwork or radiant heating systems. The heat pump is the heart of the system and is responsible for transferring heat between the home’s air and the ground.

The heat pump is connected to the underground piping, which is made up of a series of loops that are buried on the property. These loops circulate a special fluid that absorbs heat from the earth and transfers it to the heat pump, and vice versa.

For heating, the heat pump then releases the heat energy to the air circulating through the system or transfers it to water circulating in a radiant system. When in cooling mode, the heat pump extracts excess heat from the home’s air and sends it below ground through the loop system, where it is absorbed by the ground.

The Advantages of Installing a Geothermal HVAC System

Geothermal installation has a long list of benefits, some of which include:

Significant Energy Savings

One of the main advantages of geothermal HVAC systems is their energy efficiency. By using the constant temperature of the earth, these systems require significantly less energy to heat and cool a home compared to traditional HVAC systems. This can result in significant energy savings over time, as well as a smaller environmental footprint.

Improved Comfort

Additionally, geothermal HVAC systems offer a high level of comfort and control. These systems are designed to provide consistent temperatures throughout the home and can be easily adjusted to meet individual preferences.

Durability

Geothermal HVAC systems tend to offer many more years of service than other heating and cooling systems. Geothermal heat pumps last longer than air-source heat pumps, central air conditioners, and furnaces. The loop system is well-protected below ground and can last 50 years or more!

Low Maintenance

Geothermal systems have no outdoor units, which lessens the damage caused by weather conditions that can spoil other units and increase maintenance needs. As such, these systems tend to require fewer repairs over time, saving you money on service costs.
