Types of Water Heaters Grove Installs

Our friendly team of professionals will help you determine when water heater replacement and installation is recommended. We have two great options: install a traditional tank storage water heater or upgrade to a tankless water heater.

Tank Storage Water Heaters

Just as its name suggests, gas or electric storage tank water heaters store hot water in a tank and continuously heat the water up so it’s ready when you need it. Tank water heaters cost less upfront than tankless models, but you’ll pay more money on energy bills since the water needs to be warmed up throughout the day.

Tankless Water Heaters

Sometimes referred to as on-demand water heaters, tankless water heaters are growing in popularity because of their ability to provide hot water very quickly. Tankless water heaters contain high-powered burners that quickly warm up the water running through the heat exchanger. They cost more upfront to install but can save you a significant amount of money because they don’t need to warm up the water throughout the day, saving on electricity costs. Homeowners also like the fact they take up less space than tank models.

If you’re unsure what type of hot water heater is right for your home and budget, speak to the licensed plumbers at Grove Heating & Cooling. We can discuss the pros and cons of both options in more detail and help you make a decision.

Signs You Need Water Heater Repair or Replacement Service

It’s important to get your water heater inspected as soon as you notice issues before they turn into something more serious and expensive to fix. Grove Heating & Cooling has decades of experience servicing all makes and models of water heaters. Some common signs you may need water heater repair service include:

No Hot Water

Obviously, a water heater repair is needed when it stops producing hot water. Oftentimes, this issue is related to the heating elements not working properly. We can inspect the unit and advise if water heater repairs are best or whether replacing the water heater is the best option.

Leaks

Even minor water heater leaks should be inspected before causing significant damage to your home. Leaking drain valves or loose valves and connections are common causes of leaks. Although some minor water heater leaks can be repaired, most leaks indicate you need water heater replacement.

Rust-Colored Water

If your water looks rusty, it’s usually a sign of excess rust and mineral sediment at the bottom of your water heater tank. This can cause serious leaks and damage, and replacement is often recommended. Excess mineral sediment at the bottom of tanks is common in older water heaters, or units that haven’t received proper maintenance over the course of their lifespan. If you notice rust on the outside of the tank or rust in your drinking water, contact a plumber right away.

Strange Noises

Water heaters are relatively quiet even while they’re operating, so any odd noises during the heating process should be a cause for concern. While sediment buildup is the leading cause of water heater noises, water leaks, fluctuations in water and loose pipe straps can also cause strange noises.

Corrosion and Mineral Buildup

Over time, minerals and calcium settle at the bottom of water heater tanks, impending the heating process and potentially causing leaks. Again, this typically occurs with older units, so it may make sense to replace your water heater before further damage occurs.

Foul-Smelling Water

Foul-smelling water often indicates a buildup of sulfate bacteria within the tank, often caused when warm water sits for too long and bacteria builds up in the water.

Low Hot Water Pressure

Mineral buildup in your tank and pipes can slow the heating and transportation process, causing low hot water pressure. If this occurs, contact a licensed plumber to inspect the unit.

Age

Once a water heater surpasses 10 years of age, it is more likely to develop leaks that can lead to expensive damage to your home. Even if your water heater appears to be operating properly but it’s more than 10 years old, replacing it preemptively can prevent a complete breakdown or leaks down the road.
